The Witcher 3 fan beats cancer, thanks US Polish embassy

The Witcher 3 isn’t just one of the most critically well-received role-playing games ever designed. Apparently, it also helps some players going through difficult times, such as one Reddit user and The Witcher 3 fan pointed out. The acclaimed RPG helped him beat testicular cancer, and as a thank you, he decided to hang up a sign at the Polish embassy in Washington D.C.

The sign from user NotAfraidofAlQaeda expressed his appreciation to Poland, more specifically to CD Projekt for its work on The Witcher series. The sign reads “Thank you Poland for The Witcher.”

The U.S. Polish embassy revealed the news today in a tweet (via Twinfinite), saying “Pleasant surprise in front of our Embassy. Glad you like The Witcher from Poland too!” However, NotAfraidofAlQaeda revealed his plans to the Reddit community a couple of weeks ago, when he finally won the battle against cancer:

“I recently got over cancer, and Witcher 3 was a huge help through chemo/surgery/etc, and I live a few blocks from the embassy so I decided to show a little love.”

While the user adds that testicular cancer has a 95% survival rate in the USA, he mentions that he kept being misdiagnosed, and that the treatment “hurt a lot.” Thankfully, he managed to survive to tell his inspiring story and The Witcher 3 clearly helped him through those painful chemo sessions.

The Witcher series was created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and later adapted into the renowned video game RPG series by CD Projekt. The success of the three main games led to Netflix showing its interest in developing a television series, where monster slayer Geralt of Rivia is played by Henry Cavill.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming to Nintendo Switch on October 15, 2019. The complete edition features the two story expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, along with the previously released free DLC.
