Death Stranding Gamescom 2019 Trailer

New Death Stranding trailer shown at Gamescom Opening Night

A new Death Stranding trailer was shown at Gamescom Opening Night, presented by Hideo Kojima himself. Death Stranding is one of the most anticipated games of 2019, and with the details shown today we want to play it even more.

We saw several character profiles during the presentation. Each of these characters ties into the main story, but will also have substories of their own.:

Mama: Who seems to be a technician of some sort and takes care of a little ghost baby who is connected to her via an umbilical cord. She claims the baby is her daughter. Her baby was born on the “other side.” Her handcuffs seem to indicate she may also be or have been a porter like Sam.

Bridge Baby and Dead Man: Dead Man, played by Guillermo Del Toro, is a technician for the Bridge Baby Pods. BB Pods are connected to the world of the dead via their mothers, who are dead. The connection between the BB Pods and their mother weakens over time, and according to Dead Man, they have to sync with the brain dead body of their “stillmothers” located in the capital. BB Pods don’t last long, and Dead Man says there’s no record of a unit surviving over a year. Sam seems attached to his BB Pod, and it looks like part of the game may involve him trying to increase its longevity and perhaps even allow it to be born.

We also got a chance to see some Death Stranding gameplay. It begins with Sam sleeping propped up against a package he’s wearing on his back. This hilly, meadowed area looks pretty tranquil, and Sam takes the opportunity to urinate, which is apparently a gameplay mechanic. He hears a voice in the distance and uses the sensor on his back to scan for life. We got to see how Sam can use an extending ladder to climb cliff faces, and he makes it to what looks like a pre-fab building.

In the building, he is able to deliver the larger crate on his back. We see the tags on Sam’s neck are used to activate the “Chiral Network,” which seems to connect points throughout the United States. Sam then leaves and falls down a cliff, which we can see jostles his BB Pod and causes it to start crying. He then has to sooth it before moving on. The demo ends with Sam sliding down a hill, showing a mechanic where you must keep your balance.

More gameplay will be shown at Tokyo Game Show, which takes place September 11-15.
