Xbox Live Gold Subscribers Get Defense Grid: The Awakening Free

The first game available to Xbox gamers eager to begin the Games for Gold program is Defense Grid: The Awakening, as revealed by the Major Nelson blog this morning.

Defense Grid challenges players to establish and operate towers so that the steady stream of enemies headed toward your base get wiped out just in time for survival and peace to reign. Of course, you might not have much peace if you expected Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed II to kick the Games for Gold program off this month as was implied during Microsoft's E3 press conference.

But Defense Grid: The Awakening is actually a pretty fun game! If you're into tower-defense, Hidden Path Entertainment does a great job of creating balanced and challenging missions here, so don't be afraid to spend the hard drive space on this one. In fact, you can click here and add the game to your download queue from work or whever if you'd like.

Another July Games for Gold title will be available on the 16th of this month. Games for Gold adds new games on the 1st and 16th of every month so be prepared for a new "free" game every two weeks, Xbox fans.
