Detective Pikachu is the highest-grossing video game movie of all time, according to report

It is no surprise that Detective Pikachu is a hit when compared to other video game movies. Even with its less than stellar 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it is critically favored in comparison to previous video game adaptations. The appeal of Pokemon brand also got people to fill seats, with a domestic earning of $58 million, making it the best opening weekend for a video game movie. Well, thanks to some areas still showing the movie, Detective Pikachu is now the highest-grossing video game movie, setting a new record for video game movies.

According to a report by Yahoo, theaters in Norway, New Zealand, Slovenia, Portugal, and Columbia were still showing the film. These theaters helped generate $6,994 over the weekend of July 12, generating over $436 million worldwide, a record high for a video game movie. Previously, Warcraft had that top spot bringing in $433 million worldwide.

Released back on May 10, 2019, Detective Pikachu stars Justice Smith as Tim Goodman, who partners with a Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds to find out what happened to his missing father. The weird part is that Tim is the only person who can understand what Pikachu is saying. Numerous trailers for the film showcase the talking Pikachu, as well as other Pokemon including Mr. Mime, Psyduck, Jigglypuff, and Charizard. The live-action Pokemon film was directed by Rob Letterman, who has also directed Gulliver’s Travels and 2015’s Goosebumps film.

The Detective Pikachu film is based on the game of the same name. Now available for the Nintendo 3DS and coming soon to the Switch, the adventure game also features a talking Pikachu and Tim Goodman as they walk around crime scenes, look for clues, and interview people and Pokemon to solve the case. There was even a jumbo-sized Detective Pikachu amiibo that released alongside the game.

There are still a few theaters showing the movie in the United States. However, you won’t need to go to a theater to see it as its home release is slated for August 6, 2019, according to its Amazon listing.
