A Resident Evil 2 Remake escape room is coming to Japan this September. The escape room, called Biohazard the Extreme in reference to the Capcom game’s Japanese title, Biohazard RE:2, is produced by Universal Studios Japan and will put participants in the role of a Raccoon City Police Officer.
News of the escape room comes via Z6 Mag. According to Z6 Mag, the escape room is based directly on Resident Evil 2 Remake, seems to place players in the most intense period of the Raccoon City outbreak, and has five difficulty settings which change the available items and the participants’ objectives.

The Resident Evil 2 Remake escape room isn’t the first Resident Evil-themed experience from Universal Studios Japan (though it is the first based solely on a single Resident Evil game). Previously, the company produced three other experiences called Resident Evil: The Real, which featured live action elements such as actors playing zombies. The trailer for one of these experiences in 2015 appears to show participants using a kind of augmented reality headset, though it’s not clear to what extent this was implemented or if it will appear again in Biohazard the Extreme.
Video game-based escape rooms are not uncommon in Japan. These experiences provide real-life roleplay scenarios based on popular series such as Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid. Prices for video game-based escape room experiences can range from 3,000 yen ($30 U.S.) to 5,000 yen ($50 U.S.) per visit, according to Z6 Mag, though no pricing has been announced for the Resident Evil 2 Remake escape room. According to Z6 Mag, tickets for Biohazard the Extreme will be available on the Universal Studios Japan website, including an express pass option for fans who’d like to join a shorter waiting list. The Resident Evil 2 Remake escape room will run from September 7 to November 4, and additional Halloween events within the escape room will run during the last four days of the Biohazard the Extreme‘s operation.
