Borderlands 3 cross-play will not happen at launch

Borderlands 3 cross-play won’t be available at launch

While Borderlands 3 will launch across multiple platforms this September, it will not let players on those platforms play with each other. Gearbox confirmed that Borderlands 3 cross-play won’t be available at launch. However, the feature may come at a later date.

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford made the statement from the official Borderlands 3 Twitter account following a tease of today’s trailer . Pitchford seems to have made the tweet to temper fans expectations for the trailer.

“Some folks may be speculating that this thing tomorrow may be about cross-play,” stated Pitchford. “Tomorrow’s thing is awesome, but *not* about cross-play. But, Good News: We are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3 with our partners as soon as practicable after launch.”

“To be clear, there will not be any cross-play functionality in Borderlands 3 at launch as we work closely with our partners to create a positive cross-play experience as soon as practicable,” he continued in a follow up tweet. “We are committed to cross-play on as many platforms as possible.”

The Borderlands series has made a name for itself in part due to its four player co-op and just how fun it blasting psychos in the wasteland with four friends can be. Borderlands 3 looks to enhance this feature further with new additions including options for instanced loot, and level scaling. Cross-play would be a great addition to an already impressive list of co-op improvements in the game, even if it came later down the line.

Last April, Pitchford confirmed that publisher 2K Games handles all platform decisions. From his tweet, it seems that Gearbox is in the process of talking with them, and the other platform holders, on enabling cross-play for Borderlands 3. Here’s hoping that it gets the feature greenlit, so players on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia eventually get to play with each other.
