In a recent press release, a Cuphead Netflix series was revealed to be in the works alongside King Features Syndicate and Studio MDHR. The series will be fully animated and based on the same 1930s-style of art used the game. While the release date is yet unknown, we know The Cuphead Show! will follow Cuphead and Mugman as they get into trouble on the Inkwell Isles.
The Cuphead Netflix series will be made in partnership with Studio MDHR, the minds behind Cuphead. There’s already an official Netflix landing page, though no sign of a release date or cast. However, the press release gives an insight into the plot and tone of the series:
“The character-driven comedy follows the unique misadventures of the impulsive Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman. Through their many misadventures across their surreal home of the Inkwell Isles, they’ve always got one another’s backs.”

Cuphead became a phenomenon upon release. Not only was it known for difficult and lavish boss battles, but the game is immediately recognizable for using Max Fleischer’s cartooning style as its art direction. Fleischer’s most famous works included Popeye and Betty Boop, and his style has now become an icon of the 1930s. Cuphead creators took the art seriously, recreating the style with the same techniques of that era, utilizing hand-drawn cel animation and watercolor backgrounds with original jazz recordings to boot. The Netflix series promises to continue that style of music and animation, authentically bringing the world of Cuphead to television.
Further details on the series are as yet unknown, but now may be a good time to try your hand at Cuphead if you haven’t. Available on Windows, Mac, Xbox One, and Switch, the award-winning game is as difficult as it is enjoyable. Until more details on The Cuphead Show! emerge, the game will tide us over.
