GTA6 leak is most likely a fake

Recently, a “leak” has come out giving out the details of a supposed and almost inevitable Grand Theft Auto 6. However, it according to a reputable industry insider, this GTA6 leak may actually be fake.

The leak originally appeared over on a subreddit dedicated to video game leaks. It states that “GTA6,” or “Project Americas” as it’s supposedly code named, would be set in both Vice City, as well as a new location based on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In addition to this, it also claimed that the game would be heavily inspired by the Netflix show Narcos.

More importantly, the person who posted the leak claimed that their sources were people who worked for Kotaku and PC Gamer. In response to this Kotaku’s Jason Schreier recently posted a message on Twitter claiming that the leak was a fake. As part of this, he pointed out a telltale sign of a leak being a fake.

“A good rule of thumb is that if a video game leak is a giant list of incredible-sounding bullet points, it’s fake” stated Schreier. Indeed, the leak looks to be more like some fan wish list for a Grand Theft Auto 5 follow up instead of something Rockstar would actually do.

Schreier himself doesn’t work for Rockstar Games. However, the leak did point to someone in Kotaku, which Schreier works for, as one of the sources of the leak. So Schreier debunking it makes it lose its credence. Additionally, as a veteran of the industry, he’s quite familiar with how news breaks and how leaks are usually made.

Grand Theft Auto 5 originally released back in 2013 so it makes sense that some fans are getting a bit antsy. Recently, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged that Rockstar does take a long time to release sequels to its games. As part of this, he stated that he saw this trend as coming to an end. With this in mind, hopefully players will hear about the real Grand Theft Auto 6 sooner, rather than later.
