E3 2019 | Link’s Awakening dungeon creator

The remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will have a dungeon creator. The game’s remastered edition brings the Game Boy classic to a new generation of Zelda fans and gives the older generation a trip back in time. One of the new features revealed at the Nintendo Direct E3 presentation appears to be a custom dungeon creator.

As our hero Link goes through dungeons, he reaps rewards and can later use them to build dungeons to his liking. Conquer chamber dungeons and use the rewarded layout pieces to design your own challenging areas! In a sequence ushered in by the famous Dampe the Gravekeeper, we can see Link designing his own dungeon on a drawing table, using tiles earned from previous chambers. The chamber pieces fit together like a large puzzle and players can jump into custom dungeons to earn additional rewards. Put together your own creative challenges and see if you can make the ultimate Zelda dungeon! It looks like a fun addition to the classic game.

First announced back in February, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is a remaster of the 1993 Game Boy game of the same name. The Switch version completely revamps the old visual style. The game’s E3 trailer showed Link exploring 3D dungeons and walking along 2D paths. The character models look almost like children’s toys, shiny and cutesy. This creative decision got some pushback from fans, much like the cell-shaded visuals in Wind Waker of 2002. Whether it will ultimately impact sales of this iconic game’s remake is yet to be seen.

Prepare to travel to the mysterious island of Koholint once more and guide link home to safety. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will release on September 20, 2019, for the Nintendo Switch. You can check out the beautifully animated announcement trailer below.
