Rumor: Super Mario Maker 2 online multiplayer won’t include matchmaking with friends

There are some big rumors swirling about Super Mario Maker 2 online multiplayer. Namely, according to a Nintendo representative at a press event, Super Mario Maker 2 online multiplayer does not include matchmaking with friends. Instead, players will always be with random strangers from around the world. The only way players are guaranteed to play with friends is to host a good old-fashioned game night in their homes.

That’s right, it’s time to break out the extra controllers or connect your systems to the same local wireless network. Local co-op is allegedly the only way to play with friends, as per Nintendo World Report. The reasoning behind the seemingly strange decision is to ensure the online competitive mode isn’t compromised by groups of friends teaming up and possibly rigging the global leaderboards in their favor. Despite not being affected by leaderboards, the decision extends to the ordinary co-op mode as well.

Multiplayer with friends can be done either on one system or on up to four systems all connected to a local wireless network. While Super Mario Maker for the Wii U had several post-launch updates, it remains unclear if players will get to play online with friends. As of now, it doesn’t look like the feature will change.

Super Mario Maker 2 allows players to create custom Mario levels only limited to their imaginations. Maps can be built in a variety of styles, from the original Super Mario Brothers to Super Mario 3D World and more. Share your maps online, download endless ones from the library of player creations, and play online to reach the top of the global leaderboards. Just make sure to leave room on the couch if you want to play with friends.

Super Mario Maker 2 is coming June 28 for the Nintendo Switch and retails for USD $59.99, or $69.99 for the base game and a 12-month online subscription.
