Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have announced that at Nioh 2 closed alpha test is coming later this month. The closed alpha will let a select number of PlayStation 4 users try out the upcoming game.
Sony and Koei Tecmo first announced Nioh 2 at E3 2018. Since then, neither company has revealed anything about the game. This closed alpha test then represents the first time gamers will be able to catch a glimpse of the game.
The Nioh 2 closed alpha test takes place from May 24 to June 2. Team Ninja stated in a tweet that “some PlayStation 4 users” have been invited into the test, but didn’t say how they were invited. The developers also mentioned that there were no plans to extend the alpha test at the moment. That said, they also hinted that they might so so, telling players to “keep an eye on our channels for more info in the future.”
Released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC, the original Nioh borrowed a bit from From Software’s Souls games with Team Ninja adding in some innovations of their own. Players took control of an Irishman turned samurai named William, taking on hordes of yokai and other supernatural entities. Compared to the more open world nature of From’s games, Nioh action took place in self-contained stages, though each did contain a number of alternate routes.
For Nioh 2, Team Ninja will ditch the preset protagonist. Players are instead given the chance to create their own character—a feature fans requested for the first game. Despite this however, Nioh 2‘s plot still has ties to the first game.
As part of the closed alpha test’s announcement, Sony released a new trailer showing off some gameplay of the game. The trailer shows off some of the possible created characters, including female characters, as they fight and get beaten up by what seem to be some of the new, horrific bosses from Nioh 2.
