GTA5 released over six years ago, back in September of 2013, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Since then, it has aged like fine wine and become one of the most-purchased games of all time. Since its release, Grand Theft Auto 5 is now closing in on 110 million lifetime sales. The open world adventure game has been wildly successful and has survived over two generations of consoles.
The online element of Grand Theft Auto 5 has been a big part of what has kept the game alive. Players are able to team up and roam across the vast world and completing jobs together and earning in-game currency. The developer, Rockstar Games, is constantly adding in new content to make the game fun and exciting for players, which is part of the reason it has been so successful.
GTA 5 has not come without controversies though, mainly due to its violence and portrayal of women. The game occasionally features missions that are extremely violent or create an arguably negative view of women. However, the backlash it received has not slowed down the success of the game.
Grand Theft Auto 5 has been listed by numerous outlets as one of the top games of the previous console generations. Some even consider it to be one of the best and most influential games of all time. It has also received numerous 2013 Game of the Year awards from various gaming publications.
Rockstar’s other popular franchise is the Red Dead Redemption series. Red Dead Redemption 2 released last fall and quickly amassed 24 million sales. It also offers an online version of the game, but has yet to reach the same success as GTA5.
GTA5 is one of those games that only comes around every once in a while. It’s not often that a game is still one of the top-selling games every month six years after its initial release. So congrats to Grand Theft Auto 5 on racking up almost 110 million in sales.
