Mortal Kombat movie reboot enters pre-production

Ready to watch some high-flying fights set to cheesy techno music? The Mortal Kombat movie reboot is reportedly a go. Fans of the beloved video game adaptation will have a lot to look forward to in the coming months as we’re sure to see something amazing — whether it’s amazingly awesome or amazingly bad.

Confirmation of the Mortal Kombat movie reboot came out of South Australia, the primary location where shooting is taking place. It’s set to be the biggest production in the history of that local industry. Warner Bros. had announced the creation of the movie last year, although nothing is certain in Hollywood until a film actually hits theaters. Fortunately, fans of video game flicks everywhere will be happy to hear that this particular film is one step closer to release.

Eurogamer reports that writing is being handled by Greg Russo (Untitled Resident Evil RebootCategory 6) and the director will be Simon McQuoid. Both of these men appear to be relatively new to the film industry, although Mr. McQuoid has some experience directing some pretty epic PS3 commercials:

A 2018 article by That Hashtag Show has some details on the plot. Here are the characters that are reportedly going to be making a showing in the film:

  • Cole Turner (original character)
  • Kano
  • Sonya Blade
  • Lord Raiden/Jin
  • Mileena
  • Jackson “Jax” Bridges
  • Liu Kang
  • Kung Lao
  • Drahmin
  • Kabal
  • Nitara
  • Reiko
  • The Overseer (original character)
  • Reiko
  • Emily (original character)
  • Sophia (original character)
  • Jess (original character)

Several details about the Mortal Kombat movie reboot are a bit worrying. To start, film star Johnny Cage isn’t making an appearance, something that is particularly disappointing considering the whole meta nature of having a fictional film star play a lead role in a film. Raiden’s age is listed as 14 for some reason along with the alternate name “Jin,” a particularly strange choice considering he’s usually depicted as an older man.

Cole Turner will be a new character for the film, playing the poor sap who gets thrust into the world of Mortal Kombat. He’s accompanied by his 12-year-old daughter Emily, his “judgemental sister-in-law” Jess, and his mother-in-law Sophia. Cole is a struggling boxer (and widower) who has a crazy level of determination and refuses to quit.

In short, the Mortal Kombat movie reboot either sounds like a disaster or a hilarious disaster, at least from what we know so far. Either way, it’s sure to be a cheesy popcorn flick and I’m sure most of us are excited to see how it all turns out.
