3DS and Wii Dive In Japanese Sales Charts

When's that new Mario game coming out? Iwata talked about Super Mario 3D at GDC this year but since then we haven't heard a thing. You can bet that that will change at E3 2011, but it seems like Nintendo needs to give people a reason to invest in their machines a little more frequently. Maybe the lack of games and non-committal statements from Nintendo on when the heavy hitters will land is the reason for the downward trend in Nintendo Wii and 3DS sales.

In fact, over the last week, Japanese sales of the Nintendo Wii and 3DS performed worse than any other period in the hardware's lifetime. The 3DS only sold 18,324 units while the Wii tallied a mere 11,520 units sold through according to Media Create. That's a 37% drop for the 3DS from the previous week.

Here are the numbers:

1. PSP – 34,826 (previous: 55,140)

2. Nintendo 3DS – 18,324 (29,149)

3. PlayStation 3 – 13,789 (20,883)

4. Nintendo DS – 10,858 (19,516)

5. Wii – 6,336 (11,520)

6. Xbox 360 – 2,763 (3,419)

7. PlayStation 2 – 1,319 (1,696)

I think it's pretty clear that Nintendo will be pushing software as much as they'll be pushing hardware at this year's E3. Stick with Game Revolution as we bring you the latest leading into and throughout the biggest conference in gaming. We'll deliver the news from Nintendo's press conference this year as soon as it happens through liveblogging. Check out our E3 2011 tag page for what's up.
