11 bit studios has announced This War of Mine sales have gone beyond 4.5 million units. The 2014 indie hit was critically-acclaimed upon its release, receiving a perfect score from GameRevolution. Since then, the game has been updated with various DLCs, including one as recent as November 2018. Alongside the sales milestone, the studio revealed mobile spin-off of the game is now available.
11 bit studios revealed the news in a post on Steam. The lifetime sales figures were accompanied by some other notable statistics about This War of Mine. The studio touts the game performed successfully across the wide range of platforms it is available on (PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android). 11 bit points to the positive reviews the game got from outlets like The New York Times and The Guardian for its touching yet horrifying experience.
The game was popular across the globe, with This War of Mine experiencing its biggest sales in the USA while it managed to acquire a customer on Christmas Island. This War of Mine received numerous awards. From recognition at the Independent Games Festival, an SXSW Cultural Innovation Award, to Games for Change. Following the game’s success, the developers decided to contribute $500,000 to the charity War Child through the sales of This War of Mine’s DLC releases.
The post concluded with the announcement of a “new standalone story-driven” episode. This War of Mine Stories: Father’s Promise is available now on iPhone and Android for $1.99. The original game is still available for purchase on mobile alongside the new installment as well as The Little Ones DLC. Also available on mobile is a “This War of Mine – Board Game” app. The software acts as a companion app to the tabletop This War of Mine board game.
The studio continues to have success away from This War of Mine. 11 bit studios’ most recent release Frostpunk has been nominated for a narrative award at the 2019 BAFTAs.
