Mortal Kombat 11 is nearly upon us but it still has surprises in store. The Mortal Kombat 11 tag team reveal is one of those surprises, even though it isn’t a full mode like it was in Mortal Kombat 9. This comes alongside the reveal of Cetrion, the new elemental-based combatant coming to the series for the first time. NetherRealm also finally spoke about how variations will work in cplompetitive play.
This comes by way of Game Informer, as Mortal Kombat 11 is on its new cover. Mortal Kombat 11 will have tag team battles do but there is a catch. It’s not a traditional mode and only found in the game’s Towers of Time. Some of the parameters let fighters to quickly switch to a second fighter on the analog stick, allowing nimble players to set up flashy tag team combos. There will also be group battles against a tough boss but the game won’t have traditional co-op, but NetherRealm said it could be added in at a later date.
As for Cetrion, we still do not have many details on her outside of this newly released trailer. But she does match what was in the huge roster leak from February. The anonymous leaker posted about her name and her element-based powers, which were both aspects that turned out to be true. Her name was also part of the Steam achievements that came out a few months ago. Those were also backed up by the game’s official trophy list that came out this week, as there is a trophy for performing two of her fatalities.
That list also strong hints that Frost is back but a cyber ninja and basically confirms what was in that leak. The Kollector and Kitana are also on that list but have not been officially confirmed by NetherRealm, despite them both showing up in the trailers. You can see the full roster here.
Besides the MK11 tag team and Cetrion reveal, Game Informer also shared other details about the game. Variations will be a part of competitive play but will be a bit limited. While players can use whatever they want locally or in casual matches, each character will have at least two pre-built “tournament ready” variations so players know what moves each will have. Players can, however, customize each fighter’s appearance in ranked matches as these changes don’t affect cosmetic gear.
NetherRealm also said it was open to balancing each variation and changing them around if necessary. It might even add more custom moves as DLC down the line even though it would pretty difficult. Skins, however, are not as difficult and NetherRealm plans to add those down the line. The studio did pledge to add things that the community wants. You will not, however, be able to buy consumables.
