HP Reverb VR 4K headset joins Windows Mixed Reality lineup

A new HP Reverb VR headset has been announced by the US-based technology company. The HP Reverb VR is a 4K headset, offering 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye. The headset appears to be placing a focus on user comfort as well as competing with rivals on specifications.

The HP Reverb VR 4K headset is part of the Windows Mixed Reality line and was unveiled at HP’s World Partner Forum in Houston, Texas. The VR headset will be priced at $599 for consumers and $649 for the enterprise version. The two versions will launch in April.

The Reverb’s specs give it an advantage over rivals. The 4K resolution trumps the 2880 x 1600 pixels of HTC’s Vive Pro, while the HP headset’s field-of-view of 114 degrees is higher than the 110 degrees of the Vive Pro and Oculus Rift. The HP Reverb VR easily beats the competition in terms of device weight, too: The Reverb weights just 1.1 lbs, much less than other PC virtual reality headsets. The weight falls in line with HP’s promotion of the comfort of the Reverb headset. The announcement trailer refers to the design as an “ergonomic fit” and “designed to feel invisible.”

The release of the HP Reverb VR comes just a day after all eyes in the virtual reality space were on the latest release for the Oculus Quest, Oculus’ wireless standalone VR offering. An announcement also revealed that Beat Saber would be coming to the Oculus Quest. Beat Saber is the most successful virtual reality game as of yet and is seen as a must-have for the device.

Virtual reality is still yet to fully establish itself in the world of video games, so we asked you for your thoughts on if you ever think it will be the future of gaming. Valve recently seemed to pull back from the VR space with the company announcing there would be layoffs in its VR hardware division. Conversely, Nintendo recently announced its first foray into virtual reality: The company revealed its Labo line would be introducing the Labo VR, a cardboard headset which you can place your Nintendo Switch into for portable VR experiences.
