Devolver's Top Down Gorilla Violence Game, Ape Out Release Date Announced

Ape Out, Devolver’s Top Down Gorilla Violence Game, Now Has a Release Date

Devolver Digital is at it again and this time it’s with independent developer Gabe Cuzzillo and his newest game. The top-down jazzy but violent title Ape Out has had its release date set for February 7 on Nintendo Switch and PC.

“Our team is pleased to finally announce a release date for one of our most anticipated titles ever in Ape Out,” said the famously totally real Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “Frankly, it was a lot harder to motion capture an ape than we had originally thought and recording primates ripping human corpses apart is generally frowned upon in most countries.”

Ape Out kind of looks like someone heard about the classic Ape Escape series and wanted to tell that story from the monkey’s perspective, only with a lot more blood involved.

You can slam and crush your captors or use them as human shields or weapons. Doors can also become shields for all that pesky gunfire and it even looks like you can set your giant hairy self on fire and charge at your hapless victims.

With art by Bennett Foddy of QWOP and Getting Over it with Bennett Foddy fame and sound design from Matt Boch, Ape Out takes a stark yet rhythmic and percussively jazzy approach to a gorilla’s somewhat horrific escape from captivity.

In some ways, the trailer has some notes of Hotline Miami with the top down hyper-violence and ability to pick up weapons. Though this game seems much faster paced with the ability to build up momentum and chain your attacks.

While press releases are generally not to be trusted when it comes to building hype, this one says Ape Out is “the most intense fucking thing you’ve ever played.” and this description doesn’t look like it’ll be that far off the mark. We’ll just have to wait for February 7 to find out for sure.
