PS4 exclusives have proven to be the biggest contributor to record profits for Sony after a 27 increase in revenue from the PlayStation division. That led to a whopping $2.1 billion profit in the second quarter of 2018. This was achieved thanks to the massive success of games like Sony Santa Monica‘s God of War and Insomniac Games‘ Spider-Man PS4, both of which broke records of their own.
According to the Q2 2018 financial reports published by Sony, PlayStation managed to bring in a total of $4.9 billion in sales with an operating profit of $800 million. More than 86 million PS4 consoles have been sold to date, with 3.9 million units sold during Q2 2018 alone. During this period of time, PS4 exclusives Spider-Man and God of War sold around three million copies within the first three days of release, respectively.
Spider-Man, in particular, sold approximately 3.3 million copies in its first three days, breaking the record for fastest-selling Sony exclusive of all time and beating previous record holder God of War. Even recent blockbuster games like Red Dead Redemption 2 have sold more copies on the PS4 compared to any other platform, with over 68 percent of its launch week sales in the UK coming from Sony’s console. Rockstar Games recently confirmed that its latest effort is currently the most pre-ordered full game on the PlayStation Network, as well as having generated biggest day one full game sales ever on Sony’s digital service.
However, the PlayStation division wasn’t the only contributing factor for Sony’s record profits. The company’s $2.3 billion buyout of EMI Music Publishing has also been a huge impact in increasing its overall revenue, despite the decline of its mobile division. Upcoming PS4 exclusives like Days Gone and The Last of Us 2 will ensure that the Sony will not be lacking in gaming revenue anytime soon, not to mention other blockbuster games like Kingdom Hearts 3 and more.
