The new Fear Effect Reinvented showcases improved lighting and graphics.

Fear Effect Reinvented Screenshots Revealed

New Fear Effect Reinvented screenshots were revealed today ahead of Paris Games Week. The Fear Effect remake is being developed by Sushee Games and published by Square Enix. The original Fear Effect was released in 2000 for the PlayStation, although there is no release date attached to the remake yet.

The “true to the original” Fear Effect Reinvented was announced in August 2017 with a short teaser trailer. It will bring the action-adventure title to the PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Square Enix is preparing to show more of the game at Paris Games Week, which runs from October 26 to October 30. A playable demo for the game will be at Paris Games Week. The four screenshots shown recreate the feel of Fear Effect on the PlayStation but with improved graphics and effects.

Two of those screenshots appear to be pulled directly from the game as the EKG-esque health is displayed. Two of the game’s playable characters are shown in the screenshots. Hana and Deke appear in two screenshots each, while the third character, Glas, is unseen. Hana’s famous towel sequence is on display, as she has to fight past enemies on a burning dock to escape.

Fear Effect Reinvented keeps Deke's fly look..

The original Fear Effect was a unique game for its time. Unlike other fixed-camera titles that used pre-rendered 2D backgrounds, Fear Effect used looped full-motion videos. The FMV backgrounds allowed developer Kronos Digital Entertainment to add more detail and atmosphere to their games. Faux-cel-shaded characters stood out distinctly from the backgrounds, with a unique art style few other games used.

Fear Effect was well-received at the time of release. Our review from back in the day gave it an A-, which equates to about a 4.5/5 on our current scale. We praised the art style and overall presentation of the title, and called it “truly unique.” Fear Effect Reinvented looks like it could capture what made the original so good in the first place.
