Dragon Quest 3 Remake Platforms

A gorgeous Dragon Quest 3 remake is releasing worldwide

A gorgeous HD-2D remake of the third Dragon Quest game has been revealed, but what are the Dragon Quest 3 Remake platforms? As part of the Dragon Quest 35th anniversary stream celebration, Square Enix announced a Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake with a gorgeous art style reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, with plans for a worldwide release. But will there be a DQ3 Remake PS5, PC, or Switch version?

Have the Dragon Quest 3 Remake platforms been announced?

Dragon Quest 3 Remake Platforms

While at the present time no specific platforms have been confirmed for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, according to the game’s producer Masaaki Hayasaka, Square Enix is planning for “a simultaneous worldwide release on home consoles.” Given the similarity to Octopath Traveler, as the remake seems to be using the same game engine, it seems reasonable to assume the game will be released on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC just like that game did. Furthermore, unless there is some license deal in place or other limitation, the Dragon Quest 3 remake should also appear on PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X too at this point.

The resemblance to Octopath Traveler is likely because Masaaki Hayasaka also worked on that game, which combines 3D backgrounds with 2D pixel art and effects to gorgeous effect. Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii also appeared on the stream and hinted that they would probably remake Dragon Quest 1 and 2 the same way if this one was successful.

Square Enix has been saying it had plans for a Dragon Quest 3 Remake since at least 2018, although they joked at the time that they probably should make Dragon Quest 12 instead — which was confirmed as in-development last year and also announced in the 35th-anniversary stream, under the title Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. There currently aren’t any release dates for either the DQ3 remake or DQ12, but Square Enix does at least plan to take them worldwide, something Dragon Quest doesn’t always do.
