Despite being originally announced in 2013, not much has been revealed about the Cyberpunk 2077 story. CD Projekt Red has given us a glimpse of the Cyberpunk 2077 combat recently, but what the story ultimately holds remained a mystery. We now know what iconic science fiction franchises will influence the upcoming open-world RPG game, which includes Blade Runner and Robocop.
In an interview with PCMag, several CD Projekt Red developers revealed more details and information about the Cyberpunk 2077 story and gameplay. According to writer Stanislaw Swiecicki, the game will feature elements from both spectrums of the cyberpunk genre. This includes the more pulpy and action-oriented side from franchises like Robocop and Terminator, as well as the more philosophical side from Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell.
Swiecicki adds that players will still experience the “thrills of using cybernetic implants and high-tech weaponry in combat” in a Cyberpunk 2077 story filled with “depth.” The game will explore questions about the “meaning of identity and individuality in a world where people are so closely connected with technology.” The fact that the game counts classics like Blade Runner and Robocop as influences will sound appealing to fans of cyberpunk, and sci-fi in general.
Additionally, quest designer Patrick Mills revealed that the quests in Cyberpunk 2077 will be complex and allow for “emergence in gameplay.” This means that players will be given a wide variety of options to complete quests in a myriad of ways. Quests can also be activated by “little events” encountered throughout the city in the game. For instance, eavesdropping in conversations might lead to quests.
In other related news, Cyberpunk 2077 will be distributed by Bandai Namco in the UK and other European regions. Meanwhile, Warner Bros will be handling distribution in the U.S. With worldwide distributors confirmed, it might not be too long until CD Projekt Red officially announces the elusive Cyberpunk 2077 release date.
