Total War Developer Releases Educational Battle of Hastings Video

Total War‘s developer has produced a video that offers an educational insight into the Battle of Hastings. The legendary clash between the Normans and the Anglo-Saxons has been reimagined by Creative Assembly for its 952nd anniversary. Creative Assembly produced the footage in their Thrones of Britannia title, and offered an intriguing look at the rise and fall of the Anglo-Saxon empire.

The documentary was released on the official Total War YouTube channel on Friday ahead of the Battle of Hastings’ anniversary on October 14. The seven-minute long video begins with a brief explanation of the Battle of Hastings, and the year 1066, which is when it took place. The action swiftly moves on to discuss the Anglo-Saxon empire in more detail, with the Viking invasion as a key component of how Britain looked before the Normans arrived.

Dr. Neil McGuigan, who supported the development of Thrones of Britannia with his knowledge of the time, offers some further insights into the history of the Anglo-Saxons. The University of St. Andrews professor provides plenty of context to the Anglo-Saxon story, and recounts the turbulent times that Britain endured throughout the Anglo-Saxon era.

The video goes on to recount the events of 1066 in more detail, and utilizes the Thrones of Britannia in-game engine to show how mammoth the battle was.  Creative Assembly’s historical, educational video may help to explain the Battle of Hastings, and the history of the Anglo-Saxons, to children and teenagers through the video game medium.
