Gamevice Pixel 3 XL

Gamevice Pixel 3 XL Works With Pixel 2 Devices

A Gamevice Pixel 3 XL model was quietly announced following the reveal of Google’s new flagship smartphone. A popular choice of controller for the iPhone and iPad already, it’s the first time the Gamevice has been available on a Pixel device. The new Gamevice Pixel 3 XL model is fully backward compatible with last year’s Google Pixel 2 range, too, meaning those disappointed by the lack of a Gamevice Pixel 2 XL model last year won’t even need to think about upgrading their phone to get a nifty new mobile game controller.

So what about Gamevice Pixel 1 compatibility? Sadly, that’s still a no-show this time around, and the release of this new device suggests one targeting an even older device probably isn’t forthcoming.

The main reason for this is the USB-C port functionality the Gamevice Pixel 3 XL model sports. Both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 range rock USB-C ports as their main IO, with the original Pixel line-up rocking the older MicroUSB standard. That alone means the Gamevice Pixel 3 XL is incompatible with the original Pixel line-up, but it the main reason why this new device will work just fine with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

The controller, which extends for use and collapses neatly when not, grips your phone like a vice (hence the name) and connects through USB-C to avoid any patchy connection issues a standard bluetooth pairing method could bring. The hardwire connection should make for a more reliable gaming experience on your Pixel device.

Despite the Gamevice Pixel 3 XL model hogging up your phone’s USB-C charging port, a pass-through built into the controller itself means you’ll still be able to charge the device while in use and, presumably, hook it up to a PC for any extra games you need to pipe over in a hurry. Better yet, a built-in 3.5mm headphone jack brings legacy headphone use back to the Pixel line-up, meaning you won’t have to worry about picking up a bluetooth headset.

Going by the product specs, the Gamevice Pixel 3 XL device pulls power from the phone rather than relying on an internal battery. This isn’t yet another gadget you’ll need to top up from time to time.

The Gamevice Pixel 3 XL model ships today.
