A Mega Man crime prevention campaign has been launched in partnership with the Japanese police. Capcom’s iconic character, who has been the face of other police campaigns in the past, is being used a mascot once again. This time, Mega Man will front a new crime prevention awareness project relating to phishing scams.
The news came via an official statement from Capcom, and reveals that Mega Man’s presence will hope to convince citizens to report these types of crimes. In conjunction with the Osaka Preferectural Police, citizens of Osaka have been advised to be on the lookout for individuals who may try to trick them into giving up their credit card details and other personal information. The Osaka police believe that Mega Man, a hugely popular character in Asia, will help in this regard.
Capcom has worked alongside the Osaka police force since 2013 as the duo look to combat crime in one of Japan’s best known cities. The video game developer explained that campaigns like this were always necessary, and outlined how it plans to help with its launch.
“Capcom looks to support crime prevention activities in Osaka and throughout Japan with the distribution of 50,000 flyers at prefectural police departments and at the ‘Cyberspace and Real Space Crime Prevention Collaboration Campaign,'” their statement read. “Scheduled to begin on October 8, Capcom is committed to serving as a responsible corporate citizen and will continue to conduct proactive CSR activities that include the use of its games to invigorate communities and contribute to society.”
Mega Man was chosen by the police and an anti-credit card fraud group to helm the campaign’s promotional material. This includes the video game character adorning stickers, note pads, and posters. The program is due to be launched this weekend, and coincides nicely with the release of Mega Man 11, which is out now on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
