FIFA 19 Scores Top Spot in the UK, Spider-Man PS4 Now Second Best-Selling Game of the Year

After three weeks of being the undisputable champion of the UK game charts, Spider-Man PS4 has fallen to the annual behemoth that is FIFA 19. This has always been the case on a yearly basis, whenever the latest installment of the FIFA franchise arrives. However, FIFA 19 sales in its first week have actually decreased by approximately 25 percent compared to last year’s FIFA 18.

Keep in mind that the UK game charts only take the physical retail copies into account. That might mean dwindling sales of physical units, but perhaps it could also mean an increasing number of players purchasing digital units of the game instead. The PS4 version of the game accounted for the biggest percentage of the sales with a whopping 64 percent.

Despite falling to second place, Spider-Man PS4 has incredibly achieved another milestone in the process. Insomniac Games’ most recent title is now officially the second best-selling game of the year, pushing Far Cry 5 off its position in just four weeks. The achievement is even more impressive, considering that a PS4 exclusive managed to sell more units than a multi-platform game.

Another new entry in the UK game charts this week is Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles 4. It debuted at ninth place, with the PS4 version of the game accounting for more than half of its sales. The latest installment in the franchise launches seven years after the previous title, 2011’s Valkyria Chronicles 3, which was not even released outside of Japan. Meanwhile, Shadow of the Tomb Raider fell from second to third place in its second week, after failing to topple Spider-Man during week one.

Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age is nowhere to be seen in the top 40 UK games chart. It was released in the same week as Spider-Man and enjoyed relatively good sales. Square Enix recently revealed that Dragon Quest 11 sales would have to reach a certain amount in the west to justify localizations of future installments in the long-running JRPG franchise.
