Despite being grounded in PC gaming folklore, the Sid Meier’s Civilization series has some history on Nintendo. Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution released July 8 2008 on the Nintendo DS, for example. However, it has come as something of a surprise that the latest entry into the long-running series will release on the Nintendo Switch. Civilization 6 Switch has been confirmed, and it’s releasing soon.
Confirmed on the game’s official website, Civilization 6 is Switch-bound. It’s releasing this year, too. Civilization 6 Switch is due to release on November 16 2018. What’s more, the game will feature all “the latest game updates and improvements”, along with “four pieces of additional content which adds four new civilizations, leaders and scenarios.” The additional content is as follows:
- Vikings Scenario Pack
- Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack
- Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack
- Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack
The Switch version of Civilization 6 is the real deal. According to the official website, the four scenario packs each come “with a different setting and style of gameplay inspired by history”:
“Be part of the colonization of Australia in “Outback Tycoon,” defend Poland from invaders in “Jadwiga’s Legacy”, choose a Viking leader to plunder Europe in “Vikings, Raiders, and Traders!”, or conquer the known world in the “Conquests of Alexander.”
You can even take your conquests online or with local multiplayer. “Up to 4 players can cooperate or compete for supremacy via a wireless LAN,” reads the statement. It’s clear then, that the Switch version of Civilization 6 is pulling out all the stops by adding this extra content.
Despite this, many will be left wondering exactly how we will play Civilization 6 Switch. Typically, the series uses a mouse and keyboard for its commands. It will be interesting to see how Firaxis makes the game playable with standard controller inputs. It might be simpler to play the game un-docked with touchscreen controls. Civilization 6 already exists on iPhone, releasing December 21 2017, so Firaxis has something to build on there.
