Iwata Apologizes For Wii U Day One Update

The Wii U launched last week and with it came a gargantuan 5GB day one patch, which took many users several hours to download and install. In order to enjoy the majority of the system's online features, the update must be downloaded, so you really can't afford not to update the system as soon as you tear it out of the box.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recognizes that this situation is far from ideal, telling IGN: “Personally, I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box. So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch.”

Don't you miss the old days when all you needed to do was plug the system in and play? I'll forever cherish the days before updates, patches, and other technological hoops got in the way. Are advancements in technology just encouraging sloppiness in this industry? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments below.
