Gamescom 2018: Just Cause 4 Tornado Gameplay Footage Unveiled

Just Cause 4 has given fans a sneak peak of some more destruction-based gameplay footage ahead of Gamescom 2018. In a new video, Narrative Director Omar Shakir showed off the game’s worldwide gameplay premiere of a tornado tearing through the South American countryside, giving us another glimpse at the its new destructive weather.

The footage offered a look at the new wind currents system at play that let players glide through Just Cause 4‘s using their parachute and wingsuit. The grappling hook has also received an upgrade, letting users customize loadouts based on how they wish to play, which we talked about in our E3 2018 preview. Developer Avalanche Studio’s new Apex Engine adds more physics variations in Just Cause 4 too. It won’t be surprising to see plenty of fans uploading their own hilarious ways to cause as much destruction as humanly possible.

The video’s standout sequence, however, shows off how the much-anticipated tornadoes will work in Just Cause 4. The video followed the “storm chaser” vehicle — the only mode of transport that can get you close to a tornado — and gave us a closer look on how objects can get whipped up and tossed around in real time. Cars and shipping containers get tossed about like ragdolls, a bridge is ripped in two, and even a government jet proves no match for the tornado’s natural destructive tendencies.

The feat of engineering looks genuinely incredible and provides another look at how technology can help shape what a video game can do and what the medium can be capable of. Just Cause 4, being the follow-up to Just Cause 3, sees protagonist Rico Rodriguez as he hunts down the truth about his past as a secret agent in the fictional South American world of Solis. It will be available to buy on December 14 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
