Crysis Series Is Only “Breaking Even”, Says Crytek

Crysis and Crysis 2 may have both sold over three-million units each, but even that hasn't been enough in today's climate.

Crysis Co-Founder, Cevat Yerli, shared with Eurogamer that the Crysis series hasn't yet turned a profit for Crytek despite a fair amount of success.

…effectively Crysis 1 and 2 and 3 are just about breaking even. If we meet the forecasts – and I can't reveal the forecasts – then we are going to break even.

He then explained the current conditions of the market which developers like Crytek face.

The console sales are down. The PC sales are down for the retail markets. But they're getting bigger for F2P and online markets. So for a retail game like Crysis 3 it's going to be a tough one to break out and hit the big numbers.

If three-million units sold isn't enough, it's mind-boggling to think of how much funding went into each game's development. Developers have traditionally aimed for the milestone of one-million copies sold, but that has quickly become a thing of the past with today's increasing sophistication of graphical technologies.

Despite Crytek's lukewarm response to Crysis' sales, Crysis 3 is on the horizon and a Crysis 4 has already been confirmed. Maybe once they force their way into popularity they can achieve the significant numbers that Call of Duty and Battlefield do.
