Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom is the first non-Disney movie of 2018 to cross one billion at the worldwide box office. Meanwhile, Jurassic World Evolution can boast of a similarly great achievement. It has managed to sell over one million copies across all platforms in only five weeks since launch, and that’s on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Speaking with GameIndustry.biz, Frontier Developments CEO David Braben said: “We are really pleased with Jurassic World Evolution and are delighted to have crossed the 1 million unit threshold so quickly. There is no doubt that initial sales have benefitted from the worldwide awareness created by the film release, but it’s the quality of the game that’s really important and I believe our team have done a terrific job in creating a game that a wide range of players are now enjoying around the world.”
The news isn’t entirely unexpected. Earlier this month Valve revealed its list of top-sellers, most played games, top new releases and top-selling VR games of 2018 to date. Jurassic World Evolution turned out to be one of Steam’s Platinum category top-sellers, alongside the likes of Grand Theft Auto 5, Dota 2 and more. It certainly seems like gamers have been waiting for a new Jurassic Park game all this time, or it could either be just dinosaurs that drew their attention.
With the obvious success of the Jurassic Park/World franchise across two mediums, perhaps we’ll be seeing more dinosaur-themed games in the future. The franchise has started spilling over into other games. For example, Rocket League recently received Jurassic World DLC, in the form of special Jurassic World-themed jeeps and decals. In the meantime, check out our review of the game, in which we said that Jurassic World Evolution is “arguably the best Jurassic Park-themed game to date and a must-buy for fans of the films.”
