It’s not often that a sequel hits a platform before its predecessor, but that is exactly what the South Park RPG series is doing. Ubisoft announced today that a South Park The Stick of Truth Switch version is inbound and will be out sometime during or before September 2018. It will be a “digital exclusive” on the Switch’s eShop for an unknown price.
This news comes from Ubisoft’s first-quarter financial report. During their “record first quarter” that “exceeded [their] expectations,” Ubisoft’s Nintendo Switch software sales were five percent of their overall game sales, which is up from 2017’s one percent of total sales. The list at the bottom of the report details their Q2 2018 releases. The South Park The Stick of Truth Switch port sits at the bottom of the report along with Ubisoft’s other Q2 releases, which include DLC for Far Cry 5, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Rainbow 6 Siege, and more.
South Park The Stick of Truth has had an odd trajectory. After multiple delays, it finally came out on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in March 2014, a few months after the PS4 and Xbox One were released. It reviewed well and delivered on the years of anticipation and the promise of a good South Park game. The Stick of Truth eventually made its way to the PS4 and Xbox One; first as an exclusive pre-order incentive for South Park The Fractured But Whole, and then in February 2018 for everyone else.
The Fractured But Whole also came to Switch after other platforms. It hit Nintendo’s platform in April 2018 after coming out on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in October 2017. Despite coming out later on a different platform, it had no platform-centric features, which means that it’s likely that the Switch version of the Stick of Truth will also be identical to the other releases.
