More Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 Updates Planned by Nintendo

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been one of the Switch’s most successful titles. After hearty pre-release sales, it went out to critical and commercial acclaim, even outselling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as of April 2018. While it hasn’t sold quite as well, Splatoon 2 is also one of the Switch’s more successful games. Even though both are a year or so old, Nintendo isn’t done with them. Today, the console maker confirmed they are planning more updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 in the coming months.

Nintendo tweeted out a short “Ask Mr. Takahashi” where they asked Shinya Takahashi, the head of software development, a series of questions. In the video, he went over the recent Mario Kart 8 Deluxe patch that allowed players to use the Labo Toy-Con Motorbike from the Nintendo Labo Variety Kit 01 to control both bikes and regular karts. Takahashi then promised that there will be “further updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and that he wanted players to “please look forward to it.” However, he was not specific about any of these upcoming features.

He moved on to talk about Splatoon 2. After briefly mentioning the Inklings appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and speaking about its recent Octo Expansion, he revealed that there will be “more free updates all the way until December.” Again, he did not detail exactly what was coming but past Splatoon updates could give us an idea.

Coincidentally, Splatoon 2‘s 3.2.0 patch goes live tomorrow. It has a new multiplayer stage and some balance updates. Nintendo has also confirmed at least two more weapons: the the Nautilus 47 and the Bloblobber. The former is a splating gun while the latter fires bubble blobs. Given this 3.2.0 update, it’s plausible that Nintendo will continue to make more maps and weapons for the game. The first game was also supported with multiple free updates after its release.
