Another week, another UK chart update. It’s been a good week for Nintendo and the Switch. Mario Tennis Aces performed very well, completing a grand slam on its competition – claiming the number one spot. This is a big deal for the big N.
While Switch games consistently appear on the UK top ten chart, they rarely make the number one spot. Not least when the World Cup is taking place. Considering England’s current success in the tournament (it’s coming home!), people would be forgiven if they were to pick up Fifa 18 in their droves. A new tennis game, right before the beginning of Wimbledon, however (no matter how Mario) was always set to perform well. Despite this, no one expected it to claim the number one spot.
It’s Not Just Mario Tennis Aces That Performed Well for Nintendo
Indeed, Mario Tennis Aces wasn’t the only success story for Nintendo this week. Alongside the plumber’s tennis side-project, gamers have gone somewhat gaga for Mario. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey both climbed the table admirably. The full UK top ten can be seen below (old ranking in brackets):
- (New) Mario Tennis Aces
- Fifa 18 (2)
- God of War (1)
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (7)
- Fallout 4 (3)
- Detroit Become Human (4)
- Grand Theft Auto V (6)
- Call of Duty WW2 (10)
- Super Mario Odyssey (14)
- PlayStation VR Worlds (5)
Grand Theft Auto 5 seems to stay in the UK’s top ten charts week-after-week, doesn’t it? While it’s nice to see some Nintendo love in the UK, chances are that Mario Tennis Aces won’t stay in the top ten for very long. People have been voicing plenty of angry comments that the game doesn’t even let you play a normal game of tennis. Word of mouth may damage sales.
We hope that Nintendo will add more customization options to Mario Tennis Aces in the future. There’s a good game in there, but it is needlessly held back.
