Team Sonic Racing Announced for Later this Year

After a short teaser trailer, a teaser tweet, and, well, just a regular tease, Sega finally confirmed the existence of Team Sonic Racing. Sumo Digital, creators of the first two Sonic racing games, is also developing this new one. It’ll be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch at some unannounced time this winter.

Team Sonic Racing will allow for online and local play. It’ll include four-player split screen and various offline and online modes “including Grand Prix Mode, Exhibition Mode, Time-Trial and Team Adventure Mode.” The game’s Adventure Mode is the game’s campaign where “players are introduced to basic game features and characters.”

The “Team” part of its name is encouraged in during its races. The game will have various team moves that help your fellow teammates to victory including a Team Ultimate. The teaser trailer didn’t show any of these team mechanics and was just that; a teaser.

Each of the 15 playable racers from around the Sonic universe will fall into a certain category: speed, technique, and power. Their vehicles will also be customizable as players will be able to choose and tweak the look and feel of each. There  are also “Wisps” which are power-ups that help racers attack their opponents and come out ahead.

Sega has been hinting at Team Sonic Racing for few months now. The aforementioned tweet and light confirmation earlier this year shows they have not exactly been tight-lipped about a new Sonic racing game. Xbox Live Gold members are even getting 2012’s Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed next month as a part of their subscription. It was not exactly a subtle nod but another clue in the ever-growing pile of evidence of an upcoming Sonic racing game. Not much of the game was shown but, given its winter 2018 release, expect to hear more next month at E3.
