Star Wars Episode 1 Racer Finally Returns to PC

The 1999 classic Star Wars Episode 1 Racer finally returns to PC. Arguably the best thing to have come out of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (apart from Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi of course), the pod-racing game is now available on the digital distribution platform, GOG.com. Considering it’s May 4th, we don’t think this release could have come at a better time.

Originally released for the PC, it was later ported to Game Boy Color, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and Mac OS. The game received generally positive feedback from the community, and rightly so since it remains the bestselling game of its genre, selling 3.12 million copies. That’s right, it even beat series favorites like Wipeout and F-Zero.

Yet this racing favorite has only recently been added to GOG, however that may be due to the original game struggling to run on modern operating systems. Thankfully GOG has managed to alter the game’s files, making Episode 1 Racer finally playable on PC, as well as allowing 8 players to play together on the same network.

What’s more, the game is priced at only $8.49. A real steal, especially for those fans out there that have been eager to jump back into the Star Wars universe just before the Solo movie comes out later this month.

As for the gameplay, we’d argue that it’s still an enjoyable game to play even in 2018. Textures and graphics will most certainly feel dated, but we’d argue that those buying this game are not necessarily looking for great graphics. Sometimes nostalgia is more than enough, and if you’re a Star Wars fan then you’d be really missing out on a stunning game by passing on this one.

Nonetheless, if racing isn’t really your thing then it’s fortunate that today is May the 4th. Celebrating Star Wars Day, Humble Bundle has some sweet, sweet discounts for you Star Wars lovers out there. Be sure to check it out.
