Splinter Cell is back. Sam Fisher is back. Michael Ironside is back as Sam Fisher. All is right with the world. What’s the catch, I hear you cry? Well, to get another go with the man with the goggles, you’ll have to own a copy of Ghost Recon Wildlands. That’s because the title’s latest batch of free DLC is where Sam Fisher will be showing up next.
So, how does Sam Fisher end up in the far reaches of South America? As the trailer for the Special Operation teases, Langley has “sprung a leak” that needs plugging. Thankfully, Michael Ironside’s gruff voice growls a solution: he’s got some friends in Bolivia.
Ghost Recon x Splinter Cell? Marvel thought they had the best crossover of all time. They ain’t seen nothing yet.
The full briefing (i.e. an explanation of what the hell Sam Fisher is doing in Ghost Recon Wildlands) will drop on April 9. Handily enough, that coincides with the launch of Special Operations 1 on April 10, a large, free pack to ring in Wildlands’ second season of content.
While Ghost Recon Wildlands hasn’t quite been able to join Ubisoft’s Mount Rushmore of amazing open world experiences from the past few years, it’s nice to see the game being supported so heavily. Special Operations 1 will be the first of four planned DLC packs coming to the game in 2018 but this, by far, is shaping up to be the most exciting, and the first time we’ll have control of Sam Fisher since 2013’s Splinter Cell Blacklist.
Is this all just laying the groundwork for a Splinter Cell comeback? Here’s hoping. In the meantime, we’ll just have to make do with the buzzing of the goggles and the warm, gravely tones of Michael Ironside to keep us company. You can watch the full trailer below.
