Sharkmob, Formed of Ex-Devs From Hitman and the Division, to Work on Cult Classic

Sharkmob, formed of ex-developers from the well-acclaimed video games series of Hitman and The Division, has set its sights on working on an unnamed cult classic. Sharkmob is a new indie company, featuring ex-Ubisoft and IO Interactive staff, headed by former Massive CEO Fredrik Rundqvist. He started as Massive’s Business Development director back in 2008 and has quickly risen through the ranks to where he is now.

In a conversation with VentureBeat, the former producer of The Division kept his lips sealed on what this cult classic could be, only that it would more than likely be a multiplayer game that would make its debut on the PC as well as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. What Rundqvist did reveal, however, was the hope that  Sharkmob would be able to turn its new IP into a brand new franchise, “complete with content updates and live services once it’s launched.” Multiplayer is an interesting choice for a new franchise as some would expect it to be singleplayer.

However, Rundqvist has other ideas. “We’re not really interested in making a more traditional single-player type of game,” he said. “What we play privately, the kind of games we love, are very social, very competitive, always multiplayer. The more the merrier.” He also gave a possible hint on what would make its IP different from others: “Of course, in our opinion, the pure mechanics of that are not interesting if you don’t have the right IP, the right setting, the right fantasy to get people really excited about the game mechanics we provide.”

Considering the unnamed IP is considered a cult classic, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that Sharkmob already has an audience that’s just waiting for it to reveal the right content at the right time. And with Sharkmob being made up of people who have been working in the industry for over ten years, it seems safe to say that its IP is in good hands.
