Kirby Star Allies has hit a milestone, with it becoming the fastest selling game in the Kirby series’ history in the UK. In a slow month for the Nintendo Switch, it seems that many owners of the console have opted to pick up the new Kirby game, with it charting in second place in the UK sales charts. This makes it the most successful launch for a new Kirby game since the series’ inception in 1996.
There have been 19 Kirby games that have gone to retail since 1996, with 2014’s Kirby Triple Deluxe and 2015’s Kirby: Planet Robot previously achieving the series’ highest chart entries, both reaching 15th place. However, Kirby Star Allies has proven to be much more popular, flying up the charts and overtaking UK mainstays such as FIFA 18 and Grand Theft Auto 5.
The Nintendo Switch has dominated the UK sales chart altogether this week, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey both placing highly, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has remained in the top 10, too. The PS4 also had a decent week, with 78% of all boxed Burnout Paradise Remastered sales being for Sony’s console.
Other new entries include the Devil May Cry HD Collection, which entered at number 13, while Beast Quest debuted at number 35.
Next week will be a much more competitive time for the UK sales chart, with both Sea of Thieves and Ni no Kuni 2 releasing, along with Detective Pikachu on the 3DS. Far Cry 5 will then round out the month, meaning that Kirby Star Allies‘ time at the top will likely be short-lived, though impressive nonetheless.
