PUBG new crates have been added to the game’s Test Server on PC. There are two new loot boxes: the free-to-open Militia crate, and the pay-to-open Fever crate.
Some of the items do look pretty cool, with the Fever loot pool including some retro fashion of the 70s and 80s, and the Militia drops consisting of ready-for-battle soldier gear.
What’s not so cool, is the drop rates for the rarer items. The Military Skirt (Black), for example, has odds of 0.0064%. Based on the math carried out by Ars Technica, it would take players 125 years to earn this new skirt!
Here’s a list of the rarest items contained in the new Fever and Militia loot boxes.
Fever – Zest Retro Jacket: 0.6%, Zest Denim Jacket: 0.32%, Cropped Corset: 0.32%, and the rarest item: Zest Checkered Skirt: 0.16%.
Militia – Military Boots (Black): 0.4%, Battle Belt: 0.28%, Vintage Gas Mask: 0.28%, Leather Bootcut Pants: 0.08%, Military Jacket (Black): 0.05%, Military Cap (Black): 0.05%, Cowboy Hat (Brown): 0.028%, Faux Leather Jacket: 0.0128%, Cowboy Hat (White): 0.0128%, and Military Skirt (Black): 0.0064%.
The above items all have a less than one percent chance of dropping, making them extremely rare.
I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with the PUBG loot boxes, if they were only earnable in-game without also being purchasable with real-world money, and if the items themselves didn’t hold any monetary value. However, with the crazy prices items like this sell for on the Steam Community Market, it really does seem like a type of gambling.
I’m interested to hear what you think. Are the keys required to open loot boxes like lottery tickets, with the rare items being the jackpot? Or is that not a fair comparison? Let me know.
