Final Fantasy XIV’s Producer Naoki Yoshida – or Yoshi-P – has recently said that he still hopes to bring FFXIV to Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X. With Square Enix’s interest in bringing it to other platforms, discussions with each platform’s respective publishers are ongoing and “positive”, according to Yoshida.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Yoshida was asked about the future of FFXIV to which he responded that there is still room for the MMO to come to other platforms like Switch and Xbox One X. In fact, he’d like to bring FFXIV to “as many platforms as possible.” However, this is only possible if the publishers behind those platforms are interested.
Discussions like these have been ongoing for some time now, but Yoshida states that “platform holders are showing their attitude in a more positive way.” Previously, the issue with FFXIV on Switch and Xbox One X was Sony’s refusal to allow cross-platform multiplayer with those other platforms.

Yoshida reiterated this in the interview, noting that FFXIV would never come to those platforms unless all users could play together on the same server. He hopes that Sony changes its “policies or mindsets” so that this will be possible. This isn’t the first time that Sony has refused to allow online multiplayer with Xbox One X or Switch.
It happened most recently with Rocket League and Minecraft, both of which exclude PlayStation 4 from cross-platform multiplayer with the other systems due to Sony’s current policies. In fact, Psyonix has said before that cross-platform play for Rocket League “would be up and running in less than an hour all over the world” once those policies have changed.
In addition to speaking on cross-platform multiplayer, FFXIV Producer Naoki Yoshida spoke on the overall future of Final Fantasy XIV. Square Enix still has a 10-year plan for the MMORPG, with the next two years already laid out entirely, including the next expansion. The team is already hard at work on the third expansion for FFXIV, following 2015’s Heavensward and this year’s Stormblood.
