As of right now, we are sitting at just about nine hours until the release of Super Mario Odyssey here in the United States. Despite not being officially out yet – outside of review copies and broken street dates – the hotly anticipated holiday title is already breaking records in the industry.
While there is no telling how long until Nintendo will give official sales numbers for Super Mario Odyssey, we can see that it is at least successful enough on Amazon. Thanks to user LordOcidax on NeoGAF, we now know that Super Mario Odyssey is number five on the best-selling video game list for the entire year of 2017 on Amazon.
In case you didn’t catch that, Super Mario Odyssey has outsold all but four other video game items on Amazon for the whole year before even releasing. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that the top three items on the best-sellers list are all PlayStation Network gift cards.

There’s only one game that is above Super Mario Odyssey for the year of 2017 thus far and that’s its sister Switch title Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lags just behind Super Mario Odyssey at number six. According to VGChartz, Breath of the Wild is currently at just over 1.6 million retail units sold – not including digital – in the United States alone.
Unfortunately, we don’t know of that 1.6 million how many were sold directly from Amazon, but it is interesting nonetheless that Super Mario Odyssey has already surpassed it despite Breath of the Wild’s seven month head-start. Though Destiny 2 is currently the highest-selling video game for this year period, Super Mario Odyssey has at least outsold it and other major hits like Horizon: Zero Dawn, FIFA 18, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands on Amazon.
Opinion: This is very impressive for a game that’s not even out yet. Yes, it only accounts for one retailer, but it shows promising results for Super Mario Odyssey this holiday season. Ironically enough, I contributed to the Breath of the Wild sales on Amazon but I actually bought Odyssey digitally so it will be interesting to see overall sales when Nintendo releases them in the coming week. On a side note, I also contributed multiple times to the top-selling PSN cards.
