Mortal Kombat Returning to the Big Screen

Does anyone remember Mortal Kombat: Annihiliation? I'm sorry to say that I do (barely). It was a horrible black mark that totally ruined the awesomeness of the first Mortal Kombat. Yeah, it may have been cheesy, poorly written and acted, but goddamn was that movie entertaining. And then Annihilation came along and took a shit all over it. I mean, they replaced the actor for Johnny Cage with some fat guy and killed him off in the first five minutes. WTF.

Goro happy he get killed off before sequel! Acting career still ok!

Alright, alright, rant over. It's a new decade (a second new one, actually), and the past is past. Remember the short film that went viral last year on Youtube, just before Mortal Kombat 9 was announced? It looked pretty awesome and eventually led to the web series known as Mortal Kombat: Legacy. The director of both the viral video and Legacy, Kevin Tancharoen, has been picked by New Line Cinema to make a new Mortal Kombat movie targeted for 2013.

According to the LA Times story, the next MK flick is expected to be produced with a budget under $100 million and should be a more gritty, realistic portrayal (MK, realistic? Really?) than the two previous big budget films. It's also expected to release alongside the next game in the series.

I haven't seen the Legacy series, but I have hopes that this movie doesn't completely suck. Compared to the last one, that won't be difficult.
