Disney Infinity Discontinued, Avalanche Software Closed

Seemingly out of the blue, Disney has revealed today that it will discontinue the Disney Infinity series, according to an earnings report. As a result, developer Avalanche Software in Utah will be closed, with about 300 jobs to be cut.

With Disney Infinity 3.0 released in August last year, Disney reinvented the series as a platform with continual updates. So this announcement means that The Finding Dory and Alice Through the Looking playsets, expected to release in June, will be the final pieces of content with the game.

This development helps explain why Disney dropped out mysteriously from E3 2016.

According to an official statement to GameSpot by Disney's Jimmy Pitaro, Disney has decided to "transition exclusively to a licensing model" due to "the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs."

That said, there will still be Star Wars video games, of course. Disney just won't be a video game publisher anymore, but at the very least, they're not going the same way as Konami.
