Minecraft: Story Mode Gets Release Date

Telltale makes great adventure games and Minecraft is a hugely popular franchise, so Minecraft: Story Mode isn't the most surprising game despite the source material. Now the upcoming episodic adventure has a release date, and the first episode comes out soon.

Telltale Games announced that Minecraft: Story Mode debuts on October 13 with the first episode, titled "The Order of the Stone." It will be released on PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Mobile versions will follow later in the week, and the game will also head to Wii U and PlayStation Vita at a later date.

The game will receive a retail version as well, which is set to come out on October 27. It contains the first episode on the disc, and subsequent episodes can be downloaded as they come out through game updates.

Minecraft: Story Mode adds a narrative to the sandbox world in which the protagonist Jesse hopes to meet The Order of the Stone, a group of warriors who defeated the Ender Dragon. Obviously something goes wrong, and now he/she must find The Order to help stop a new threat.

The game touts an impressive voice cast, including actor/comedian Patton Oswalt as the male version of Jesse. Other participants include Catherine Taber, Ashley Johnson, Dave Fennoy, and plenty of others.

I've never played Minecraft, but I enjoy Telltale's games. Perhaps Minecraft: Story Mode will be my introduction to the blocky sandbox world. Be sure to read our preview from PAX Prime last month.
