Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple

Like it or not, Steve Jobs has played a huge role in the games industry, with his iOS devices creating a strong, sustainable platform for indie developers. That's why the news that Steve Jobs is stepping down from his position as Apple's CEO will have a profound effect on the future of games.

Having spearheaded much of the development of the iPhone and iPad, Jobs was instrumental in creating devices that drew in millions of casual and core gamers, as well as helping push the importance of connected devices.

Most likely due to his ongoing illness, Jobs will become a Chairman of the Board, with Tim Cook becoming CEO. Jobs said:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

As he was aware that he would have to step down at some point, Jobs positioned the company to be able to handle his departure, but with the world's most powerful turtleneck wearer having left, it'll be interesting to see if Apple will keep its competitive edge.

Apple stock was down 7% in after-hours trading.
