Tim Schafer Says Reaction to Molyneux’s Godus Controversy Is “Unfortunate and Unfair”

Near the end of a video (above) updating followers on the state of Broken Age and an upcoming behind-the-scenes documentary on game development, Tim Schafer shares his thoughts on the heated controversy of Peter Molyneux not following through with his plans and many promises for Godus:

The last thing I'd like to do is to send our support to our friend and fellow developer, Peter Molyneux. In the last few weeks, we've seen some extremely rough treatment of Peter on the Internet and on the games press. I think it's really unforunate and unfair and I don't think it's healthy. Obviously, things did not go as expected on his game and because of that people are making some nasty accusations about Peter. And I can relate to that, believe it or not.

I'm not saying developers like Peter and I shouldn't be responsible and shouldn't be accountable to  deadlines. I am just saying the reaction to recent events and the tone of that reaction [are] really way out of proportion to the seriousness of the events themselves.

Tim Schafer hopes that the documentary will help make people understand that delays and miscalculations are far from a rare occurence in game development:

Out of the many goals of this documentary that we're making is to show actual game development and show that the developers are human beings. I think it's clear that the problems that Peter is having are not unique to him, and in fact, they happen on many, if not most, projects.

I believe the Internet is a place with many opinions and is an outlet for a lot of outrage that's unexpressed in real life, so in order for anyone to listen, their opinions have to be that much more forceful. While I do think there's a certain mob mentality on the Internet when it comes to nearly every gaming controversies, I also believe that Molyneux should be held accountable for not being as transparent and as prompt on the development of Godus.
