Sony Abandons Trademark for The Last Guardian [Update: Sony Responds]

[Update] Sony has confirmed that, despite the trademark being abandoned, The Last Guardian has not been canceled. The company told GameSpot that it "can confirm that The Last Guardian is still in development."

Apparently the trademark debacle was the result of an administrative error.

[Original] Sony has abandoned the trademark for The Last Guardian.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the trademark was abandoned today, February 16, because "no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued."

For those who've been living under a rock for the past six some-odd years, The Last Guardian is the name of Team ICO's PlayStation 3 exclusive that was announced during Sony's E3 press conference way back in 2009. Since then we've heard and seen very little of the game, but Sony refuses to say it's been canceled. In fact, Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida said last year that "development couldn't be better."

So what do we make of this? Has Sony finally given up on the project? Could the game be getting a brand-new title? We'll keep you updated as soon as we know more.
