How to unlock Ultimate difficulty in Spider-Man 2
To unlock Ultimate difficulty in Spider-Man 2, you have to beat the game. After you roll credits, you will be greeted with the above pop-up telling you about the new difficulty. You can switch to it right away in the options, too, and also start a new game from scratch on Ultimate. There are even independent settings in the options that will now let you put specific aspects of the game on Ultimate difficulty (like enemy health).
Ultimate difficulty, as its title implies, is a much harder version of the game. There is no special trick to this mode, as it mainly just dials up some of the existing knobs. Insomniac describes it as a mode that is for “expert players who enjoy a brutally difficult experience.” According to the bars on the main menu, enemies appear to be around 20% more aggressive, do about 40% more damage, and have around 30% more health when compared to its average difficulty setting called Amazing.
It is likely that players will be able to play through New Game Plus on Ultimate difficulty, as that was also a possibility in the two other Insomniac Games Spider-Man titles. However, New Game Plus is not scheduled to come to the game until near the end of 2023.
There is seemingly no reward for playing on Ultimate difficulty. Spider-Man 2 currently has no trophies related to difficulties, nor does there seem to be a hidden suit tied to it. 2018’s Spider-Man did have an extra trophy tied to Ultimate difficulty, but that was likely because it was added in a post-launch patch and not required to get the Platinum trophy. However, it is possible that the team adds a trophy for beating Spider-Man 2 on Ultimate difficulty after the fact.
