Sea of Stars Multiplayer: Can You Play Co-op?

A Sea of Stars multiplayer mode would give players the opportunity to take on the Fleshmancer together. However, retro RPGs like this don’t often have co-op. Here’s whether Sea of Stars has a multiplayer mode or not.

Is there Sea of Stars multiplayer?

There is currently no Sea of Stars multiplayer mode. There is no co-op or competitive play, as this is strictly a single-player adventure for the time being. Connecting a second controller just mirrors the first controller, though, so it’s somewhat possible to backseat drive on the first player (or vice versa).

And while it seems like Sea of Stars is not getting a more traditional multiplayer mode, it is getting a mode developer Sabotage Studio is calling Single Player Plus, as noted by a Kickstarter post. It is, by the studio’s own admission, not a fully fledged co-op mode, but it will allow two players to jump into Sea of Stars and control different characters. The team also pointed out that it will be a local-only mode.

The first player will still control the camera, enter and exit zones, and trigger big events, but the second player can roam around freely within those restrictions. The second player can swim, climb, explore, jump, and even control their character during combat. It will also be a role players can drop in and out of at will, so there’s not much of a commitment either way.

And, as an added bonus, Single Player Plus will come with a few optional puzzles that require two players “for the best experience.” Completing these will unlock the Halls of Cooperation, a short “bonus dungeon” that Sabotage encourages that players play with a friend. The “for the best experience” part implies that co-op won’t be absolutely mandatory, but it’s unclear.

It’s also unclear when this mode will come out. Sabotage only stated that it would be working on this feature as soon as the game came out. It will be free, though.

Sea of Stars multiplayer FAQ

Q: What can the second player do in the Single Player Plus mode?

A: The second player can roam within the areas designated by the first player. They can swim, climb, explore, jump, and even participate in combat. They can also drop in and out of the game anytime, ensuring flexibility without commitment.

Q: Will there be content designed specifically for this co-op mode?

A: Yes, there will be optional puzzles optimized for two players. Completing these unlocks the Halls of Cooperation, a bonus dungeon that’s best played cooperatively.
